Orientalism in art - the Orient is just as fascinating today as it was then. In the 18th and 19th centuries, after the end of the expansive phase of the Ottoman Empire and in connection with the increasing aspirations of European powers to rule the Islamic world, an almost romanticized view of the Orient spread. Harem paintings and depictions of Near and Far Eastern motifs remained in demand on the art market.
In recent years, works by numerous European painters dealing with the Middle and Far East have been offered for sale at VAN HAM: Hermann Corrodi, Rudolphe Ernst, Carl Wuttke, Max Friedrich Rabes and Eugène Girardet. Artists from older generations who devoted themselves to Orientalist themes are also regularly on offer, such as Eugène Delacroix and Jean Léon Gérôme. The impressive painting "The Port of Jaffa" by Gustav Bauernfeind was sold for almost 1 million euros at VAN HAM, breaking the record for a 19th century painting in Germany. Today, the painting is on public display at the Dahesh Museum in New York.
Dr. Petra Versteegh is a proven expert in the art of Orientalism and has been a representative at VAN HAM for over 25 years. She looks after clients in Belgium, the Netherlands and the neighboring German region and works closely with the Fine Art department in Cologne.
