Together with 19th century German painting, the Old Masters form one of the cornerstones of the Fine Art department's offering. Over the years, this department has made a name for itself through its keen eye, its commitment to provenance research, its investigation of the attribution as well as the state of preservation of the works, and its exchange with renowned international experts. All this has led to the rediscovery of several masterpieces of art history, some of which can now be admired in national and international museums and institutions.
The highlight of VAN HAM's history is Gerrit Dou's Dentist, acquired by the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth Texas (USA), one of the most important American art museums. Another discovery was Samson and Delilah by the Bolognese painter Lionello Spada. The painting, of which a copy sold by Sotheby's was known, had lain forgotten for years in a villa in southern Germany. After careful restoration, the work could be traced back to the painter's corpus. It is therefore not surprising that a work of such high quality and fresh provenance has achieved one of the highest hammer prices in the field of Emilian Baroque painting.
