While the schools of painting in Germany tended to be small-scale and multi-layered, Europe was characterised by national schools. The artists of Eastern Europe enjoy a special reputation today. In the past, VAN HAM has successfully sold works by Polish artists such as Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski, Joseph Brandt, Ladislaus von Czachórski and the Czech Jaroslav Vesin. Other Eastern European artists, who were very modern in their time, had to emigrate to the West after the revolution, such as Konstantin Korovin to Paris or Konstantin Gorbatov, who first moved to Italy and later lived and worked in Berlin. His views of Venice are international highlights today.
Works by the Ukrainian painter Franz Roubaud also achieved high price increases and remain a safe investment. The catalogue raisonné of the artist's works was published by VAN HAM Art Publications in 2012. The Odessa-born painter is one of the Eastern European artists who trained at the Munich School of Painting, which had a decisive influence on its international reputation.
