The approximately 50 lots of paintings and drawings by Rudolf and Matthäus Schiestl presented in this ONLINE ONLY auction provide a comprehensive insight into the work of the two artist brothers from Franconia.
Unjustly, they have received far too little attention from art historians; after all, they played a central role for art in southern Germany - and far beyond its borders - and today, in magnificent, brilliant and clear colors, they give us authentic testimony to the Franconian landscape and the people of their time. While in Rudolf's work we can find especially genre depictions of rural life in the most diverse facets, Matthew's work consists primarily of religious themes, sagas and legends, and depictions of nature. Both locate their scenes with local customs and topologies in the Franconian region and place people at the center of their paintings. Contrary to the art-theoretical tendencies prevailing at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, they used a remarkable objective realism and can therefore be seen as forerunners of future trends. At the same time, they refer in composition and pictorial structure to the great German masters of the 15th and 16th centuries.
Numerous studies, some of which were in the estate of Rudolf Schiestl, enrich the offer of paintings in this ONLINE ONLY auction: artistic processes but also differences and parallels of the works of Rudolf and Matthew become clear. Moreover, the offered comprehensive convolute from an important, renowned collection of a South German patron is a real rarity on the international art market.
