The auction focuses on painterly works of modern and contemporary art whose pictorial content detaches itself from the object-relatedness of earlier centuries. By distancing themselves from and renouncing the representational, the artists achieve a detachment from a naturalistic, reality-based depiction. Only shapes, colors, lines and contrasts are declared to be the content of the picture. The aim is alienation to the point of unrecognizability. Absolute painting, as abstract painting is sometimes called, allows artists greater freedom in expressing their inner self and represents a form of expression far removed from guidelines and motifs. The origins of abstraction lie in the first decade of the 20th century. Even today, abstraction is an important means of expression for contemporary artists. More than 100 lots will be offered in the online auction, the variance of which reveals the variety of ways in which artists of the 20th and 21st centuries treated abstraction and how contemporary abstraction still is today.
