While painting on wood continued until the late Middle Ages, the stretcher frame replaced the wooden ground in the Renaissance at the latest, and canvas remained the most popular medium until the onset of postmodernism. With post-war art in the 1960s, a new concept of art finally developed, objects, editions and multiples became popular, and the medium of painting was even declared dead. With the younger generation, painting is experiencing an impressive renaissance, so that there are no limits to contemporary art, particularly in terms of format and technique.
