2206 LAMA BUDDHASHRI. LAMA BUDDHASHRI. Tibet. Heavy copper bronze with partial fire-gilding, silver inlays and a reddish brown lacquer patina. This might be the depiction of this high lama, who was also called Sanggye Pal, living from 1339-1420. He sits on a double lotus with his hands in dharamachara mudra in front of his chest. The engraved garment trimmings are accompanied by silver pearl borders. On the back inlaid cloud pattern in silver. Height 19.5cm. Base sealed. The founder of the Kagyü school tradition in Tibet and the chief disciple of Milarepa. He is also known as the great physician of Dagpo and lived from 1079 to 1153. Here he is shown with a characteristic hat of a lama and in flowing robes. He sits in the attitude of Amitayus, refering to him as one of his forefathers. Baseplate renewed. Height 11cm.
