FAQ – How do I sell?

Frequently asked questions about consigning and selling your art at VAN HAM

How can I present my objects for valuation?

Personal appointment

We will be happy to provide you with a free and non-binding verbal appraisal for your objects, which you can present to our experts in person at an appointment during our business hours. For larger collections or estates, there is of course also the possibility of an on-site appraisal.

By digital object appraisal

Use our digital object valuation form for your inquiry. Here you can enter all important information and add photos.

In order for us to properly evaluate your works, please note to send us the following information and photos of your objects in appropriate quality:

  • Front and back in full
  • Detail shots of: Signatures, titles, designations, labels, damage, etc.
  • Additional information: Receipts, provenance or exhibition history.

Please make sure that your personal information is complete: Name, telephone number, e-mail address and contact person. We ask for your understanding that we can only assign and answer your inquiry if your contact data is complete. Our experts will contact you after the research.

By e-mail or post with photos

We are happy to receive digital or printed photos that you can send us for the evaluation of artworks, because "a picture is worth a thousand words". In order for us to properly evaluate your works, please note to send us the following information and photos of your objects in appropriate quality:

  • Front and back in full
  • Detail shots of: Signatures, titles, designations, labels, damage, etc.

By video conference

Instead of a home visit, we also offer you the option of a video conference via Facetime or TeamViewer with our experts. We will be happy to arrange an appointment with you for a non-binding video assessment.

Please send us the following information about your object(s) in advance:

  • Front and back in full
  • Detail shots of: Signatures, titles, designations, labels, damage, etc.
  • Additional information: Receipts, provenance or exhibition history.

To make an appointment, please send your request to: info@van-ham.com

We also offer a valuation service for insurance and inheritance cases. Please use our property valuation form.

What are the costs of consignment?

Our offer is individually tailored to you. In a personal consultation, we will be happy to explain the most favorable conditions for you. Should an object remain unsold, you will not incur any processing or insurance costs.

What other costs should be considered?

Resale right fee: Pursuant to § 26 UrhG (German Copyright Act), the seller is obliged to pay a statutory resale right fee on the sale proceeds of all original works of fine art and photography whose authors have not yet died 70 years before the end of the calendar year of the sale. The consignor is charged a flat rate of 1% of the hammer price for this fee, plus statutory VAT if applicable, and is thus exempt from his own obligation to pay the resale right.

What are the imaging costs?

The cost of illustrations is graduated according to size (from € 50 to € 600).

How do my objects get to VAN HAM?

We will be happy to arrange favorable transportation for you upon request.

Are my objects insured by VAN HAM?

The items entrusted to us are insured at our expense.

Do my objects need to be restored before the auction?

We arrange professional restorations for you, if they seem recommendable for the sale.

When will I receive the payment after a successful sale?

Five to six weeks after the auction you will receive your invoice together with a crossed check, subject to receipt of payment from the buyer. For other payment methods please send us a short message.
