VAN HAM Restitutions

In November 2014 the splendid tondo with the depiction of Mary and Christ by the workshop of Sandro Botticelli will be put up for auction. His paintings are rare on the art market and therefore it is a special sensation that such a museum painting is shown to the public in the course of this year's autumn auction.

Not only the significance of this work for art history is impressive but also its eventful history. Formerly the precious tondo of Mary was part of the extensive Jewish collection Nardus. In 1940 the German Revision and Trust registered this painting and more than 150 other art objects as "property of the enemy" and finally the Nazis confiscated it in 1942. The tondo was acquired at Lempertz in 1943. Presumably the heir of the painting did not have notion about the painting's provenance. After her death the tondo was consigned to VAN HAM for auction and the restitution process was initiated. We are proud to have reached agreement with all parties so that this extraordinary painting came up for auction on November 14th, 2014.
