Michaelina Wautier

New Attributions

The story surrounding the consignment of a heavily soiled painting depicting two boys was particularly exciting. An old collection label on the back attributed the work to the Antwerp painter Justus Sustermans (1597 – 1681). However, the experts at VAN HAM had to rule out this attribution when comparing it with the works that have been confirmed for Sustermans to date. Thanks to the excellent international network of experts, the decisive tip came from the Dutch art historian Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, who recommended that we contact the curator Katlijne Van der Stighelen in Antwerp. She was preparing an exhibition on the painter Michaelina Wautier (1617 – 1689), one of the rediscovered "Old Masters" of Dutch Baroque painting. After the professional cleaning of the painting, which brought to light the quality of the painting that could previously only be guessed at, it was clear: VAN HAM had found a masterpiece! The scientific research paid off in every respect. The Belgian Phoebus Foundation acquired the work from the painter Michaelina Wautier for 490,000 euros. The art-historical success story culminated in the work subsequently being on loan to the exhibition at the MAS in Antwerp.
