German Expressionism continues to shape the art landscape. Exhibitions of Expressionist masterpieces are worldwide crowd pullers. On the auction market, the colorful paintings achieve record sums and complete every collection.

The movement developed from the two groups "Die Brücke" and "Der Blaue Reiter". "Die Brücke" was founded in Dresden in 1905 and its best-known representatives included the artists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Otto Mueller and Emil Nolde. A raw painting style and intense colors are characteristic. Their style broke with previous art. Today, the movement is considered a pioneer of modernism. Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke, Alexej von Jawensky and Gabriele Münter were among the most important representatives of the "Der Blaue Reiter" group of artists.
