In a total of four auctions featuring the insolvency estate of the convicted art consultant Helge Achenbach, Van Ham did about 11.6 million euros worth of business in 2015/16. Now his portion of the disbanded “Rheingold Collection“ with 70 unique works of contemporary Rhenish artists will be auctioned off. Outstanding photographic works by Tillmans, Höfer, and Struth are joined by museum large formats by Tal R, Jörg Immendorff, and Imi Knoebel.

For his ambitious aim to systematically promote the art location Rhineland and its artists, Helge Achenbach could win over the financially strong brothers Viehof and Hedda im Brahm-Dröge as co-collectors in 2002. He was also able to gain the directors of the most important museums, among others Kasper König (Museum Ludwig, Cologne), Veit Loers und Susanne Tietz (Museum Abteiberg, Möchengladbach), and Jean Hubert Martin (Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf), for the collection’s advisory council. Not least because this, the works of the collection are convincing with impressive exhibition histories, which not only led them to the Rhineland, but also to large, international museum.

The exquisite set of photographic art in the collection with works by Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer, and Beat Streuli, is led by Wolfgang Tillmans. Early on, Achenbach acquired the two unique, large formats from the “Freischwimmer“-series, in which his nose for outstanding talents is reflected. Recently, the Tate Modern in London dedicated a splendid exhibition to Tillmans, which also featured this series.

Moreover, the catalogue presents a unique offer of Daniel Richter with about 40 typical works from 2001-2003, as well as large paintings by Jörg Immendorff, Markus Lüpertz, Tal R, and many others.

The moderate assessments of the value add up to a total of 800,000 euros, so it will be interesting to see, whether the auction is going to reach a similar rate of increase as the Achenbach auctions two years ago.
