The painter and draughtsman Karl Hofer is an important artist of classical modernism, in which he occupies a special position. His work cannot be categorised as either German Expressionism or New Objectivity. In this catalogue you will find an interesting selection of paintings and works on paper by Karl Hofer (1878-1955). His paintings are characterised by a strict and simple, classically balanced composition and subtle colour modulation as well as a lyrical, melancholic expression of strong psychological expressiveness.
From 1898 to 1955, Karl Hofer created around 2,900 paintings and many more works on paper. From 1905, Hofer's paintings were regularly shown at exhibitions, such as the "Berliner Secession". Works by Hofer can be found in the National Gallery in Berlin, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and numerous American museums in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, among others.
