City - Turmoil - Progress. Our online auction "Metropolis" addresses a very specific theme and feeling. In addition to high-rises and facades of skyscrapers, and other motifs dedicated to urban space, a particular interest is shown in artists who were inspired by cities such as New York and Paris and which they then elevated to international art hubs. These include the Pop Art movement with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Thomas Bayrle, who were fascinated by the seriality of everyday life and understood this structure as the basis for the representation of the industrial age. The works offered by Christo and Jeanne Claude, on the other hand, document the manifold projects in which monuments and squares in public space were manipulated by concealment. The works of Ernst and Hilla Becher, which capture the industrial architecture on the periphery as constructs of a progressive industrial age, and conclude the theme of the auction.
