D x C – Artists from the Rhineland

18 – 26 January 2023, 6 p.m.

Auction: 19 – 26 January 2023
The first lot expires at 6pm.

The online auction is dedicated to one of the most important art scenes that formed in Germany from the 1960s onwards and, with more than 100 works by German post-war artists, is able to capture the spirit and mood that prevailed in the art metropolises of Cologne and Düsseldorf. Even today, the Rhineland is still an important location for art, thanks in part to the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
In Germany, from the mid-1960s onward, the Rhineland in general - Cologne and Düsseldorf in particular - assumed an important role for the art market. A circle of important artists forms at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Franz Erhard Walter, Günther Uecker and Heinz Mack, among others. Some of the movements that emerged here were drastically different from the current of abstract expressionism that was emerging in America at the same time. Pop Art spills over into Germany, and the term Capitalist Realism is coined.
At this time, galleries also became increasingly important, informing and (commercially) conveying information about current art through important exhibitions and campaigns. With the Kunstmarkt Köln, the forerunner of today's Art Cologne, a point of attraction for a local and international audience emerges in Cologne in 1967, which is able to provide an overview of the entire current art offer and at the same time should offer the possibility to buy on the spot.
From the 1980s onwards, the Neue Wilden celebrated their breakthrough in Cologne. The artists' group Mülheimer Freiheit includes Pieter Bömmels, Hans-Peter Adamski and Jiri Georg Dokoupil. In Düsseldorf, the students of Bernd and Hilla Becher, including Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth, made art history in the 1990s with the Düsseldorf Photo School. The reputation of the Düsseldorf Academy continues to this day, producing contemporary artists such as Karin Kneffel and Sabrina Fritsch on the art market.
Discover a diverse action program with local but internationally renowned greats.
